I do not use the term at all - for the reasons listed. The word itself is a negative - working on your own is not. Instead, I always tell others I have my own design firm or that I work independently.

agreed. I even heard a man say on television the other day "I am a freelance graphic designer. As you may have guessed, that means I am unemployed."
Definitely not the way I want potential clients to think of me.
