Jeff Fisher LogoMotives same-sex wedding graphic appears in new 'Celebration Graphics Sourcebook'

A same-sex wedding graphic, created by designer Jeff Fisher to celebrate his 2004 marriage to long-time partner Ed Cunningham, is featured in the recently released book Celebration Graphics Sourcebook: Festive Designs from All Cultures. The volume, by John Stones, is distributed in the U.S. by Rockport Publishers.

Celebration Graphics Sourcebook presents innovative case studies from across all media, budgets, and cultures. Celebrations are arranged month by month, interspersed with weddings, birthdays, Name Days, and other life-marking events.

In the spring of 2004, Multnomah County (OR) historically began issuing same-sex marriage licenses. Fisher and Cunningham were married before family and friends on the stage of a Portland community theater; an event featured in the local newspaper Willamette Week. Oregon's on-going political battle over same-sex marriage resulted in an amendment to the Oregon Constitution later that year, and the marriages being declared invalid by the courts.

The graphic representation of the couple, with designer Fisher in a Hawaiian shirt and law firm administrator Cunningham shown in a business suit, was used for the ceremony invitation, thank you cards, and an announcement of a summer wedding reception held in the gardens of Joy Creek Nursery. The design also appears in The Big Book of Logos 5 and is part of the Multnomah County Wedding Album Project (2004-2005), now in the Oregon Historical Society collection.

'Letterhead & Logo Design 11' features C.A.T. design

An identity design by Jeff Fisher, the Engineer of Creative Identity for the Portland-based design firm Jeff Fisher LogoMotives, has been given yet another life in the recently released book Letterhead & Logo Design 11. The volume, produced by Design Army, is a Rockport Publishers release. The resource contains hundreds of inspirational logos and letterheads from designers around the world.

Fisher's selected design was the result of a request from the Cat Adoption Team organization to participate in a pro bono effort to create a new identity for the "no-kill" feline facility. In an "a-ha" design moment, while doodling one day, the designer came up with C, A and T letterforms creating a cat image. Confidently presented to the nonprofit's appreciative marketing, advertising and design-savvy Executive Director, the identity idea still required approval of the Board of Directors. With the governing body, the concept was DOA for not being "warm and friendly enough."

The design won a Silver Award in the Summit Creative Awards. It is also in the book Killed Ideas, Vol. 1 and will be in the volume Designing for the Greater Good. The work of Jeff Fisher LogoMotives has appeared in over three dozen books from Rockport Publishers.

Toot! Toot!*: "Really Good Logos, Explained"
features Jeff Fisher LogoMotives efforts

Designer Jeff Fisher, the Engineer of Creative Identity for the firm Jeff Fisher LogoMotives, has been recognized with the publication of two of his identity designs in the new Rockport Publishers book Really Good Logos Explained: Top Design Professionals Critique 500 Logos and Explain What Makes Them Work. Fisher's logo creations for Good Pig, Bad Pig and Shopping and F***ing are among the designs featured and critiqued in the volume by creative industry experts Margo Chase, Rian Hughes, Ron Miriello, and Alex White.

Owner Brett Bigham executed the original pig illustrations that were incorporated into the identity for Good Pig, Bad Pig, his Portland-based greeting card company. The logo previously appeared in the Spanish book Logos from North to South America.

Shopping and F***ing, a play by Mark Ravenhill, was represented by a graphic of a shopping cart, complete with the usual wobbly front wheel. The show was produced and presented in Portland by the triangle productions! theatre company, for which Fisher has designed over 100 logos in the past 18 years. The logo also appears in the The Big Book of Logos 4.

In Really Good Logos, Explained, the panel of internationally acclaimed designers critique and appraise over 500 examples of truly exceptional logos, and explain what makes them work. The insight provided by these four outstanding editors is - like the logos themselves - succinct, specific and effective. Their comments provide a rare and insightful glimpse into the inner workings of excellent design, and offer a new understanding that is immeasurably useful to anyone working within the creative fields today.

Jeff Fisher has received nearly 600 regional, national and international graphic design awards for his logo and corporate identity efforts. His work is featured in nearly 100 books on the design of logos, the business of graphic design, and small business marketing.

The development of a great relationship
with Spanish publisher Index Book

Over the past few years I've developed a great relationship with the Spanish publisher Index Book, resulting in incredible international exposure for my work. It all began with initial email contact with designer and author Pedro Guitton when he was planning a series of logo design books. The series didn't develop as originally hoped, but in the process the project evolved into the book Logos: From North to South America, published by Index Book. I was honored to have 46 logos featured in the volume. The book has now been published in a mini paperback version soon to be released in the U.S.

Since then Guitton has always kept me aware of upcoming design book submission needs for Index Book. As a result, my work is represented in the beautiful book Fashion Identity, recently made available in the U.S through Amazon.com. The upcoming Guitton book Brochures: From North to South America will include some of my work, as will the restaurant graphics book Eating and Designing from designer Marta Aymerich.

Some time ago Pedro Guitton invited me to participate in another of his book projects, one devoted to designers, celebrities and icons that individuals in the design profession admired. The concept was to produce a book of graphics images and logos, from designers around the world, that represented those admired people. My submitted graphic was a very simple tribute to Milton Glaser. I recently noticed that Guitton has included the image (shown above) on his promotional page for the book, to be called A Tribute to Celebrities. The book will be launched at the London Book Fair in February of next year.

In an email from Guitton this past week, he told me of his latest project - a book to be called A Tribute to Typography, for which he is currently accepting submissions. Index Book often makes their call for entries public and I include the information in my semi-regular design competition deadline updates on bLog-oMotives.

Index Book is additionally greatly increasing exposure of designers through the publishing of Spanish language volumes of some Rockport Publisher offerings. 1,000 Retail Graphics recently became 1000 Diseños Comerciales , and 1000 Restaurant Bar & Cafe Graphics was translated to 1000 Diseños de restaurantes, bares y cafés, resulting in Rockport book participants having a much great audience in promoting their work.

Design studio housecleaning - excavated artifact #11

Sorting through 30 years of files and boxes of old design projects is a major undertaking. I've been doing it for several months now and I've only made a small dent in the archives of my work. I'm also archiving old project floppy and zip disks as I dig through the stuff in my home-studio. Still, I guess that it's a good thing I seldom throw anything away.

The other day I was going through a box of old papers and came across a page of media contacts. Many of the names had been crossed out. Phone numbers were scribbled all over the page. I couldn't imagine why I might have saved the piece of paper. I turned it over and discovered numerous phone messages, obviously transcribed from my old answering machine. There were some other messy mindless sketches at the top of the page. Doodled at the bottom was the image of a television set, a micro- phone and a newspaper - the beginnings of one of my favorite initial logo efforts.

In the early 90's I started doing contract design work for an independent public relations and marketing specialist by the name of Denny Shleifer. Shortly after starting our business relationship, he asked if I could design a new logo for his business - something that was more dynamic and fun than the image he was using at the time. Shleifer brought an energy to his work that I hadn't experienced in many people in his industry and he was a great deal of fun to be around.

The doodle above, surrounded by other notes, was obviously done while I was on the phone with someone else. The black ink of the drawing matches some other notations. It immediately captured the persona of Denny Shleifer.

Once in a while there are those logo concepts that I just know will be the identity to represent the client. This was one of those situations. I remember showing Shleifer the final concept and he responded with "Wow, this is me!"

The design provided me additional confidence in my logo design abilities when it was selected to be included in the Rockport Publishers book Letterhead & Logo Design 4. Years later it was featured in The Best of Letterhead & Logo Design.

In 1995 Shleifer incorporated his business and changed the official name to Shleifer Marketing Communications, Inc. The altered name required a few adjustments in the logo. I unsuccessfully tried to convince my client that "Inc." did not need to be in the new image. Still, it didn't seem to be too distracting in the revised identity.

The new Shleifer logo got additional exposure in the books International Logos & Trademarks 4, Letterhead & Logo Design 5, More Logos & Letterheads, and the Japanese offerings New Logo & Trademark Design and Logo & Trademark Collection.

In previous bLog-oMotives entries I took a look back at excavated artifacts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

Jeff Fisher LogoMotives design

to appear in LogoLounge, Volume 4

Jeff Fisher, the Engineer of Creative Identity for the Portland-based firm Jeff Fisher LogoMotives, has been informed his personal logo design for hairstylist Micki King will be featured in the upcoming book LogoLounge, Volume 4. While working at the Chameleon Salon in Portland, King commissioned the designer to create the identity incorporating the reptile, a yin yang reference, possible swirl imagery and Celtic letterforms. The selected design was the result of that unusual list of creative ingredients.

An international panel of judges, including Louis Lygo of Wolff Olins, Jerry Kuyper of Jerry Kuyper Partners, Jason Schulte of Jason Schulte Design, Gaby de Abreu of Switch Branding & Design, Haley Johnson of Haley Johnson Design, Neville Brody of Research Studios, Janet Martin of Communication Arts, Inc., and Chris Campbell of Interbrand selected the designs to be included in the winter 2008 book release, to be produced by Rockport Publishers. Over 28,000 logos were judged; with 2,000 being chosen for the new volume. The membership website LogoLounge allows designers to easily share their ideas and concepts with peers and clients through logo design uploads to the site. The logos are categorized, providing members ease in researching design concepts, and viewing the work of designers and firms from around the world. Submissions are then judged for inclusion in future LogoLounge volumes.

Jeff Fisher LogoMotives was previously represented with a total of 11 logo designs published in LogoLounge, Volume 1 and LogoLounge, Volume 2.

Jeff Fisher has received nearly 550 regional, national and international graphic design awards for his logo and corporate identity efforts. His work is featured in more than 85 books on the design of logos, the business of graphic design, and small business marketing.

Fisher is a member of the HOW Magazine Editorial Advisory Board, the HOW Design Conference Advisory Council and the UCDA Designer Magazine Editorial Advisory Board. Jeff Fisher LogoMotives design

featured in 1000 Retail Graphics

The identity for the Portland-based business institution W.C. Winks Hardware is featured in the new design book 1000 Retail Graphics: From Signage to Logos and Everything In-Store from Rockport Publishers, Jeff Fisher, the Engineer of Creative Identity for the firm Jeff Fisher LogoMotives, designed the logo. The book, featuring a wide variety of design images from around the world, was compiled and edited by the design firm JGA. (A Spanish edition, 1000 Diseños Comerciales has been released by Index Book.)

For nearly a century the hardware retailer did not have a business identity at all - although nearly everyone in the city was aware of Winks Hardware due to its reputation as the hardware store. Client Anne Kilkenny, grand-daughter of founder W.C. Winks, requested a logo that would look as if it had been in use since the day the store opened in 1909. Fisher created a stylized illustration of Winks from the only existing photo of the man and made use of typefaces appropriate to the early 1990's.

The Winks Hardware logo has previously been published in the books American Corporate Identity/14, New Business Card Graphics 2 (Japan), Letterhead and Logo Design 7, Graphically Speaking, LogoLounge, Volume 1, Logo Design for Small Business 2, and Logos from North to South America (Spain).

Jeff Fisher has received nearly 550 regional, national and international graphic design awards for his logo and corporate identity efforts. His work is featured in more than 85 books on the design of logos, the business of graphic design, and small business marketing.
